ALLEGATIONS of sexual abuse, infestations of vermin and staff smoking cannabis are some of the 685 concerns received by HIQA about nursing homes in the first six months of this year.

Documents released under Freedom of Information laws also revealed one family “felt pressurised and rushed to sign a ‘Do not Resuscitate’ form by staff”.

Relatives and concerned parties reported alleged unexplained injuries, foul smells, insufficient staff and failures in care for elderly residents in homes across Ireland.

Some concerns about neglect included residents being “left in soiled clothing and linen”, unclean premises, a lack of personal care and incontinence wear not being changed regularly.
