EAST GALESBURG — While Galesburg and unincorporated Knox County have both decided to open up shop for marijuana dispensaries and other businesses using the newly legal substance, East Galesburg may soon break from the pack.
A recreational cannabis opt-out ordinance will be raised before the village board at 5 p.m. Wednesday. According to the trustee who brought the ordinance forward, the main reason behind this move is the village’s own lack of a police force.
The village’s police chief and two officers resigned in November, and the city has lacked a police force since then. With that in mind, Village Trustee Karen Kraft felt the village would be better off without a dispensary.
