Despite a growing number of patients registering for the state’s medicinal cannabis program — now at roughly 87,000 — the number of physicians who are eligible to prescribe the medicine has remained static at just over 1,000.

Advocates in the healthcare space list a number of reasons why doctors, physicians assistants and nurses remain in the dark about the program, even as adult-use, recreational cannabis inches closer to becoming legal in the state.

“Many doctors are unaware of the modalities offered to patients aside from inhalation,” said Paula Gordy, a public health administrator for more than 20 years and a patient consultant for Curaleaf NJ, the state’s biggest provider of medical cannabis. “Thus, they unknowingly misinform and we have to continue to work diligently to correct this.”
