Liberal heartland revolts against proposed road tunnel

The Western Harbour Tunnel is designed to funnel traffic from the Warringah Freeway under the harbour to the Rozelle Interchange where it links to Westconnex and the City West Link, and provides a bypass of the Sydney CBD.

It will also connect to the planned Beaches Link tunnel under Middle Harbour, which is designed as an alternative to the congested Spit Bridge.

A spokesman for Transport for NSW said the project’s Environmental Impact Statement showed it would “generally” reduce congestion in North Sydney.
